The Huntington YMCA in collaboration with the Huntington County School Corporation and funded by Parkview Huntington Hospital has developed a program, which allows all third graders in Huntington County to take swim lessons. The YMCA aquatic staff will supply the instruction, and the School Corporation will be providing transportation, and supervision. Most of the classes are held at the YMCA, but, classes from Lancaster, and Salamonie, are held at Salamonie School.
This program gives all third grade students in the county the opportunity to learn water safety, swimming skills, and rescue skills. It is our goal to provide quality instruction by a certified staff of instructors, to as many individuals as possible.
Huntington County has a variety of aquatic venues. Youth have access to rivers, lakes, ponds, pools, and the reservoirs. We need to educate our youth on aquatic safety, and to make this education not only affordable, but also part of the curriculum.
Each student in 3rd grade will meet 2 times a week over a 4-week period of time.
471 students participated from 8 schools.
